Miscreants Clash with Police at Fatullah; 40 Injured
Narayanganj, Mar. 27: At least forty persons, including ten policemen, were injured following a clash between police and miscreants centering the arrest of a Jubodal leader and his nine associates at the Fatullah thana area on Tuesday evening.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, police arrested Jubodal leader Farid (35) and his associates Rahmatullah, Shamsul Haque, Nannu Mia, Giasuddin, Alauddin, Jamal, Abul Hossain, Sattar, and Sultan Noor in front of the Jamuna Oil Depot at the Panchabati area while they were gambling at about 6:30 p.m. yesterday. On hearing the news of Farid’s arrest, about five hundred to six hundred supporters of Farid went on a rampage and damaged at least ten to twelve passenger buses on the Dhaka–Narayanganj road at the Panchabati area and blocked the road by parking vehicles haphazardly.
The miscreants, mostly equipped with firearms, sharp weapons, and hockey sticks, gheraoed Fatullah thana and tried to snatch away the arrested persons from inside the police station. They pelted stones, exploded numerous handmade bombs, and fired huge gunshots, creating a reign of terror in and around the thana premises.
Police responded by firing about thirty rounds of rubber bullet shots and twenty-five rounds of tear gas shells. The clash continued from 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., leaving at least forty persons injured. Road communication between Dhaka and Narayanganj was disrupted from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. following the incident.
When contacted, on-duty officer SI Makbul Hossain said that police used twelve rounds of tear gas shells and thirty rounds of rubber bullet shots to bring the situation under control.
It may be mentioned here that Farid was wanted by police for several cases against him, including murder cases. A case has been registered with Fatullah police station accusing thirteen known persons and 300–400 unknown persons in connection with the incident.
