Course Description

In a rapidly changing world characterized by information overload and global events, the capacity to read, interpret, evaluate, and communicate is becoming increasingly important. This course – 'Print Media and English' – offers students a way to develop key 21st-century skills by regularly examining newspaper articles online. Newspapers are essentially not pages filled with news, but pages filled with learning opportunities that we can use to amplify students’ critical thinking, communication skills, media literacies, and everyday life experiences. Students will study various societal domain-based and themed modules such as politics, education, health, environment, sports, communication, economics, law, international affairs, and many others while developing the skills to concisely and clearly express their thinking. The course will promote students’ engagement through hands-on learning, collaboration, and active learning and creativity through discussions, writing workshops, debates, and project-driven activities.

Learning Objectives

  • Specialized vocabulary across various soietal domain.

  • Awareness of current affairs (national and international).

  • Civic awareness and critical thinking necessary for debate, group discussions, etc.

  • Thematic understanding of society.

  • Public speaking, argumentative writing, opinion expression, summarizing, and paraphrasing.

  • Writing summaries, reports, and editorials.

  • Internalize grammar structures naturally by noticing patterns in use, rather than isolated drills.

  • Career readiness regarding journalism, public relations, administration, and more.

  • Gain media literacy to distinguish between facts and opinions, identify bias, and understand source reliability.

Grading

Grading will be based on constant checks of your participation in class activities, writing tasks, pair work, group discussions, debates, and other assigned tasks.
