Counterfeit Currency Racketeers Apprehended in Jessore
A total of 49 counterfeit currency notes, in Tk 100 and Tk 50 denominations, were recovered by police on January 2 from separate locations in the district. Police apprehended two individuals in connection with this.
Bagharpara police arrested Masudul Karim of Chuitpur village, in Jhikargacha upazila, from Roypur Bazar, recovering 46 counterfeit Tk 100 notes from him. Police suspect he is a member of an organized gang dealing in forged currency.
In a separate raid, Monirampur police arrested Kamal of Bashbaria, in Monirampur upazila, from Monirampur Bazar, and recovered three forged Tk 50 notes from his possession.
According to knowledgeable sources, counterfeit currency has flooded rural markets recently, and organized gangs are cheating innocent farmers and day-laborers. Jute growers are the worst affected.
A bank manager told a correspondent that they recently detected forged Tk 500 notes, which are pink. These notes can be identified by an indistinct watermark of a tiger's head on the left side and a slightly defective security thread.
The authorities should warn the public about these counterfeit currency notes.
