English Grammar Practice
🎯 Project Objective
This project will guide students to identify, construct, and apply three major types of sentence structures in English grammar:
- Simple Sentences – One independent clause expressing a complete thought.
- Compound Sentences – Two or more independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions like
and
,but
,or
. - Complex Sentences – One independent clause and at least one dependent clause introduced by subordinating conjunctions like
because
,although
,when
.
🧩 Project Phases
Students will begin with a teacher-led discussion supported by visuals and real examples.
- Definition and function of each sentence type
- Examples broken into parts (subject, verb, conjunctions)
- Mini quizzes and sentence cards for engagement
Sentence | Type | Why? |
---|---|---|
She loves painting. | Simple | Only one independent clause |
He studied hard, and he passed the test. | Compound | Two clauses joined by "and" |
Because she was tired, she went to bed early. | Complex | Dependent clause + independent clause |
Students will write original examples to demonstrate understanding.
- Write 3 examples for each type of sentence (9 total)
- Use meaningful topics like school, family, or hobbies
- Underline subject + circle conjunctions
Example:I woke up late, but I still reached school on time.
– Compound
In groups, students will design visual charts showing:
- Definitions of simple, compound, and complex
- Labeled examples (clause, connector, punctuation)
- Color coding: e.g., red for subjects, blue for verbs, green for conjunctions
These posters will be displayed for class reference.
Students will play a team-based activity where they:
- Receive shuffled sentence strips
- Work together to sort them under the correct structure
- Explain why each sentence belongs in that category
This reinforces identification skills and collaboration.
Each student will write a short paragraph (6–8 sentences) using at least:
- 2 simple sentences
- 2 compound sentences
- 2 complex sentences
Instructions:
- Highlight each sentence type with a different color or label
- Topic suggestions: “A Rainy Day”, “My Pet”, “My Favorite Game”
