The subjunctive mood is used to express wishes, demands, suggestions, recommendations, necessities, or situations that are hypothetical, unreal, or contrary to fact. In hypothetical or unreal situations, we replace 'was' with --select--werewasbe for all persons, as in 'If I were a bird.' After expressions of demand, suggestion, recommendation, or necessity, the verb is used in its --select--base formpast form-ing form, regardless of the subject — so 'is' becomes --select--bebeingbeen, as in 'I demand that he be happy.' In a formal inverted hypothetical sentence, 'if' is dropped and the sentence begins directly with --select--WereWasDid, as in 'Were I a king!' Finally, after the word 'wish', when we talk about a present situation we would like to be different, we use the --select--past simple tensepresent tensefuture tense.
